Manu Tuilagi Set to Miss Top 14 Opener with Broken Hand

Manu Tuilagi’s eagerly awaited debut for Bayonne will be delayed after the former England centre broke his hand. The injury means the 33-year-old will miss the start of the Top 14 season, including the opening match against Perpignan on September 7.

Tuilagi, who ended his international career by leaving Sale Sharks at the conclusion of the Premiership season, has been a significant signing for the French club. The Samoa-born star, with 60 England caps to his name, has joined Bayonne after the RFU's rules required players to be based in England for international selection.

Bayonne confirmed the injury, stating: "Following the preparation match against Biarritz Olympique, some players are returning to the infirmary. Manu Tuilagi, with a broken hand, will be out for between six and eight weeks."

The news is a setback for both Tuilagi and Bayonne, who were hoping to make a strong start in the Top 14 with the addition of the powerful centre. Tuilagi’s absence will be keenly felt, as he was expected to bring considerable experience and physicality to the team.

For Tuilagi, this injury adds to a list of setbacks that have affected his career, but he will be focused on recovery and returning to the pitch as soon as possible. Bayonne will need to adjust their plans and find alternatives while they await his return.
