Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Laver Cup, Citing Team Europe’s Best Interests
Rafael Nadal has officially withdrawn from this month’s Laver Cup in Berlin, stating that other players are better positioned to help Team Europe secure victory. The 38-year-old tennis legend, who has been sidelined since his defeat in the men’s doubles quarter-finals at the Paris Olympics in August, shared his disappointment at missing the prestigious team event.
“I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week,” Nadal announced. “This is a team competition, and to really support Team Europe, I need to do what’s best for them. At this moment, there are other players who can help the team deliver the win.”
Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam singles champion, did not disclose any specific injuries or health issues leading to his withdrawal. However, his recent struggles with fitness have been well-documented. Earlier this year, Nadal hinted that 2024 might be his final season in professional tennis, though he expressed a desire to compete in a full schedule, including the Grand Slams.
The Spaniard’s 2024 campaign has already been disrupted by setbacks. After missing Wimbledon to focus on the Olympics, Nadal faced a thigh issue in Paris, where he was eliminated in the second round of the men’s singles by eventual gold medallist Novak Djokovic. At the French Open, his only Grand Slam appearance this year, Nadal suffered a surprising first-round defeat to Alexander Zverev.
Nadal’s absence from the Laver Cup is particularly poignant given his history with the event. He has appeared in three previous editions, forging memorable moments alongside Team Europe’s stars. His withdrawal comes as Bjorn Borg, Team Europe’s long-time captain, prepares for his final year in the role.
“I have so many great, emotional memories from playing Laver Cup, and I was really looking forward to being with my teammates and with Bjorn in his final year as captain,” Nadal added. “I wish Team Europe the very best of luck and will be cheering them on from afar.”
The Laver Cup, contested between Team Europe and Team World, will take place in Berlin from 20 September. Despite Nadal’s absence, Team Europe will look to maintain their dominant record in the tournament, having won four out of the five previous editions.
As Nadal focuses on his recovery and the potential swansong of his glittering career in 2024, tennis fans will hope to see him return to the court soon.
