Josh Kerr Breaks 43-Year-Old Record with Victory at 5th Avenue Mile in New York

Josh Kerr cemented his status as one of the world’s elite middle-distance runners by winning the 5th Avenue Mile in New York for the second consecutive year, shattering a course record that had stood for over four decades.

The Scottish star crossed the finish line in an incredible time of 3 minutes 44.3 seconds, obliterating the previous record of 3:47.52 set by American Sydney Maree in 1981. Kerr’s performance comes just days after finishing fifth in the Zurich Diamond League, adding yet another impressive achievement to his already stellar season.

Kerr, who is both the world 1500m champion and an Olympic silver medallist, led the field from start to finish, holding off a challenge from American Josh Hoey and Kenyan Amon Kemboi, who finished second and third, respectively. The victory means Kerr, 26, now holds two of the top three fastest times in the history of the prestigious race.

Speaking after his record-breaking run, Kerr expressed pride in his achievement, saying, “To break a record that has stood for 43 years is something I’m really proud of. New York has been good to me, and I’m thrilled to defend my title in such a special way.”

Meanwhile, fellow Scot Neil Gourley, who had also enjoyed a strong season, finished in 16th place.

Kerr’s dominant display in New York further establishes him as one of the world’s top mile runners, and his back-to-back victories at the 5th Avenue Mile are another milestone in a year filled with success. With his sights set on future championships, the 26-year-old continues to build an impressive legacy on the global stage.
