Kevin Sinfield is set to remain part of the England coaching team despite initially planning to leave his role this summer
Kevin Sinfield’s future with the England rugby team remains uncertain as head coach Steve Borthwick hopes to retain him in some capacity after the team's tour of Japan and New Zealand. Initially announced in January, Sinfield's departure was expected following the tour, but Borthwick is optimistic about reaching an agreement to keep him involved.
"Kevin is with us until the start of November, and I'm hopeful we will be able to find an agreement," Borthwick stated. "Kevin wants to continue his involvement with the team, I want him to continue, and I’m sure the players do too. Hopefully, when we get back to England, we will be able to put something in place to keep that going."
Sinfield has been serving in a skills, kicking, and mentorship role in 2024, after Felix Jones replaced him as defense coach at the start of the year. While Sinfield is unlikely to stay in a full-time role, Borthwick envisions his continued involvement whenever the team is in camp.
"It won't necessarily be on a full-time basis, but I am hoping to have him whenever we are in camp and to involve him as much as possible," Borthwick added. "He enjoys it and he adds tremendous value."
In other news, Borthwick is hopeful that the newly finalized Professional Game Partnership between the RFU and the clubs will significantly enhance player preparation for Test rugby. Starting next season, Borthwick will select around 20 players for "enhanced contracts," which will include a centrally contracted element. Lock Maro Itoje and captain Jamie George have already been offered these hybrid deals.
Under the enhanced contracts, the RFU will pay players around £160,000 annually, replacing the current match fee of £23,000 per game. Borthwick believes this change will ensure players are in optimal condition for international matches.
"Medically and from a strength and conditioning point of view, the players will be in better condition when it comes to England playing games," Borthwick explained. "Ultimately, we want the best players playing in an England shirt in the best condition so we can compete with the top sides in the world."
