Letsile Tebogo Shines with Dominant 100m Victory at Rome Diamond League

Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo showcased his electrifying speed with a commanding win in the 100m at the Rome Diamond League, stopping the clock at 9.87 seconds. The Olympic 200m champion’s performance was nothing short of spectacular as he eased off with 15 meters to go, glancing back at his competitors before cruising across the finish line.
Tebogo’s dominant run left a strong field trailing in his wake, including former world champions Christian Coleman and Fred Kerley of the United States, who finished second and third with times of 9.92 and 9.95 seconds, respectively. Great Britain’s Jeremiah Azu placed eighth with a time of 10.17 seconds, while home favorite and Tokyo Olympics champion Marcell Jacobs struggled, finishing last in the nine-man field.
Tebogo’s performance in Rome further cements his status as one of the fastest men in the world, adding to his growing list of achievements following his Olympic gold in the 200m. His ease in victory, combined with his confident glance back at the competition, signals a bright future for the 21-year-old sprinter.
In the women’s events, Team GB’s Daryll Neita delivered a strong performance in the 200m, finishing third with a time of 22.46 seconds. American Brittany Brown took the victory, crossing the line in 22.00 seconds, with Neita earning valuable Diamond League points as she continues to build on her impressive season.
The Rome meet also witnessed a near-record-breaking performance in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, where Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi ran the second-fastest time ever recorded in the event. Yavi’s stunning time of 8:44.39 was just shy of the world record, a fact she acknowledged with a mix of pride and frustration.
"I looked at the time after the race and I went, 'oh, no!'" Yavi said. "I was really expecting that record and I was going for it. I definitely feel I should break it, and I believe it will happen."
Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent also made headlines, winning the women’s 100m hurdles in a world-leading time of 12.24 seconds, which also set a new national record for Jamaica. Her victory adds to the growing list of exceptional performances by Jamaican hurdlers on the global stage.
In the men’s shot put, three-time Olympic champion Ryan Crouser of the United States continued his dominance by setting a meeting record with a throw of 22.79m. Crouser comfortably beat Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri, who finished second, underscoring his position as one of the all-time greats in the event.
The Rome Diamond League meet delivered thrilling performances across the board, with Tebogo’s win, Yavi’s near-record, and Nugent’s national best all highlighting a night of world-class athletics. As the Diamond League season progresses, these athletes will look to carry their momentum into future competitions, with the Paris 2024 Olympics already looming on the horizon.
