Lead Artist Targets Doncaster's Betfred Park Stakes After Goodwood Setback
Lead Artist, the promising Dubawi colt trained by John and Thady Gosden, is set to make his next appearance at Doncaster's Betfred Park Stakes after unsuitable ground conditions forced a last-minute withdrawal from the Celebration Mile at Goodwood. The Juddmonte-owned three-year-old has been rerouted to the Group Two contest at the St Leger Festival, scheduled for September 14.
Having caught the eye with an impressive maiden victory at York in May, Lead Artist appeared poised for a strong season. However, he experienced a setback at Newmarket's July meeting, where he struggled on soft ground and suffered a surprise defeat. The colt quickly redeemed himself at Goodwood, showing his true potential with a commanding win in the Group Three Thoroughbred Stakes.
The Gosden team had intended to build on that success by returning to Goodwood for the Celebration Mile. Unfortunately, the arrival of rain and the resulting soft to heavy ground prompted a change in plans, with connections deciding to protect the colt from conditions they already knew he disliked.
Barry Mahon, Juddmonte’s European racing manager, explained the decision: “We think he’ll head to Doncaster for the Park Stakes. We learnt our lesson in Newmarket the time before on soft ground, so there was no point throwing the horse in on soft to heavy at Goodwood as we know he doesn’t like it. He’s in good form, so hopefully, we’ll go to Doncaster with him.”
The Park Stakes, a seven-furlong Group Two race, will provide Lead Artist with an opportunity to step up in class while competing on more favorable ground. With his talent and a carefully managed campaign, the colt is expected to be a leading contender at Doncaster, where he will aim to secure his place among the top three-year-olds in the division.
As the St Leger Festival approaches, all eyes will be on Lead Artist to see if he can deliver another standout performance and continue his upward trajectory in the competitive world of British flat racing.
