Paris 2024 Olympics - Men's Singles

British number one Jack Draper's Olympic campaign came to a halt in the second round at Roland Garros, as he succumbed to American seventh seed Taylor Fritz in a grueling encounter. Draper, 22, lost 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 2-6 under the sweltering Paris heat, marking the end of British interest in the singles draw.

Draper began the match with confidence, securing the first set through aggressive play. However, he was unable to convert any of the six break points in the third game of the second set, a pivotal moment that allowed Fritz, 26, to regain momentum. The lengthy rally in the fourth game seemed to drain Draper, whose fitness issues have been a concern throughout his early career.

As temperatures soared above 30°C, Draper's performance began to falter. The world number 27 struggled with his groundstrokes and serve, ultimately losing 10 of the next 13 games. Draper, who complained about the lack of access to cold water during the match, acknowledged the challenge posed by the extreme conditions.

"It was brutal out there," Draper said. "It is the hottest conditions since I've been out in America at the start of the year, so I'm not used to it. My physicality still has to get better but I gave my all."

Murray and Doubles Partners Continue to Impress

In contrast, the day was marked by success for British tennis in the doubles events. Retiring icon Andy Murray extended his career with a dramatic victory alongside Dan Evans in the men's doubles. The British pair advanced to the quarter-finals with a hard-fought win over Belgium's Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen, showcasing Murray's enduring skill and determination.

In the women's doubles, Katie Boulter and Heather Watson delivered an impressive performance, defeating Germany's Angelique Kerber and Laura Siegemund 6-2, 6-3. However, Watson faced disappointment in the mixed doubles later in the day, losing alongside Joe Salisbury.

As the Paris 2024 Olympics continue, British fans have a mix of emotions, celebrating the successes in doubles while reflecting on Draper's early exit from the singles competition. The excitement around Murray’s final matches and the continued efforts of British players keep the spirit of the Games alive.
