Jordan Petaia Eyes NFL Switch, Following Path of Rees-Zammit and Mailata
Australia’s multi-talented back, Jordan Petaia, appears to be the latest high-profile rugby union player setting his sights on American football’s NFL. The 24-year-old, whose versatility allows him to cover outside centre, wing, and full-back, is reportedly in line to join the NFL's International Player Pathway (IPP) development camp in Florida this January.
This potential move would place Petaia alongside other notable rugby converts who have ventured into American football in recent years. Wales’ Louis Rees-Zammit is a recent example, joining the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad earlier this year as a wide receiver after taking part in the IPP. Although he was initially close to making the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster, Rees-Zammit eventually found a place with the Jaguars, showcasing the growing trend of cross-code talent migration.
Petaia’s departure from rugby union may come after his current contract expires in November, marking a pivotal moment for the Wallabies star. Queensland Reds coach Les Kiss acknowledged that Petaia’s journey could lead to a significant shift, stating, "Jordy's on a pathway to some other opportunities at this stage, but we've got a good handle on things. He's here, and we've got communication with him."
Having made his international debut at just 19 during the 2019 Rugby World Cup, Petaia’s rapid rise was indicative of his prodigious talent. Known for his explosiveness and skill, he earned 27 Test caps for Australia before a shoulder injury in April put a temporary halt to his on-field activities. Despite this setback, the lure of a new sporting challenge in the NFL seems to have emerged as an exciting next chapter.
If Petaia successfully transitions, he will follow in the footsteps of Jordan Mailata, another Australian who made headlines by crossing codes. Mailata, who transitioned from junior rugby league to become a key member of the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive line, is arguably the most successful product of the IPP. His impressive athleticism and rapid adjustment to the demands of American football have turned him into a valuable asset for the Eagles, earning him a contract extension and a key role in the franchise.
Before the establishment of the IPP, former rugby league star Jarryd Hayne also made the leap to the NFL, representing the San Francisco 49ers in the 2015 season. Though his stint was brief, it paved the way for subsequent players from rugby backgrounds to explore American football.
Petaia’s prospective journey underscores the ongoing exchange between rugby and American football, highlighting the similarities in athletic traits that players like him can bring to the gridiron. With his background in high-pressure international competitions and an aptitude for adapting to different positions on the field, Petaia has the potential to make an impact in the NFL if given the opportunity.
As January approaches, the rugby world will watch closely to see if Petaia can follow Mailata and Rees-Zammit’s footsteps, trading tries for touchdowns and carving out his own path in one of the most competitive sports leagues in the world.
