Armand Duplantis Sets World Record and Wins Gold in Men's Pole Vault
Paris 2024: Swedish Star Breaks Record with 6.25m Vault
Sweden’s Armand Duplantis has electrified the Stade de France by setting a new world record of 6.25 meters to claim gold in the men’s pole vault at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The 24-year-old pole vaulter, who has already established himself as one of the greatest in his sport, added another historic achievement to his illustrious career. Duplantis, who had previously cleared six meters to win successive Olympic titles, set an Olympic record of 6.10 meters on his next attempt before surpassing his own world record of 6.24 meters from April this year.
The record-breaking performance came on his third and final attempt, thrilling the crowd and further cementing his status as a pole vault legend. This is Duplantis’ ninth time breaking the world record, underscoring his dominance and consistency in the event.
Celebrating the moment, Duplantis raced to embrace his friends and family, draped in the Swedish flag. The celebration continued with a lap of the track as Abba’s “Dancing Queen” resonated through the stadium, capturing the joyous atmosphere of the occasion.
“I haven’t processed how fantastic that moment was,” Duplantis reflected after the event. “It’s one of those things that you don’t really feel is real. It's such an out-of-body experience.”
The Olympic pole vault champion expressed his childhood dream of breaking the world record at the Olympics, and achieving it in front of a record-breaking crowd was a dream come true. “The party is going to be pretty big. Not that much sleep, a lot of partying, a good time,” he added.
In the medal standings, American Sam Kendricks took silver with a clearance of 5.95 meters, while Greece's Emmanouil Karalis secured the bronze on countback with a best height of 5.90 meters.
Duplantis’s victory and world record performance not only highlight his exceptional skill and dedication but also add to a legacy of greatness in pole vaulting. His ability to inspire and entertain continues to shine brightly on the global stage.
