You Got To Me Supplemented for Betfred St Leger as Ralph Beckett Eyes Classic Glory
Ralph Beckett has opted to supplement his star filly You Got To Me, winner of the Irish Oaks, for the final Classic of the British Flat season, the Betfred St Leger, which takes place this weekend at Doncaster. Beckett, who has a history of successfully running fillies against the colts in this prestigious race, said that the prospect of good ground was key to his decision to enter You Got To Me in the £50,000 supplemental stage.
Beckett has previously enjoyed success in the St Leger with fillies, having won the race with Simple Verse in 2015, and finishing second and third with Talent and Look Here, respectively. His confidence in You Got To Me is bolstered by the favorable ground forecast.
"I don’t think stamina will be an issue," Beckett commented. "She seems in good shape. We’re conscious that her best form is on good ground or faster, and it looks like being that at the weekend if the forecast is correct. It felt like a good fit for her.”
The decision brings the total number of entries to 10 following Monday's confirmation stage. Aidan O’Brien, who has won the St Leger seven times, still holds five of the remaining entries, including the first three in the ante-post betting market. Great Voltigeur runner-up and Royal Ascot winner Illinois heads the Ballydoyle contingent and is expected to be ridden by Wayne Lordan, with Ryan Moore opting for Leopardstown to ride Auguste Rodin in the Irish Champion Stakes.
O’Brien’s unbeaten colt Jan Brueghel is another major contender, having already shown his prowess with three wins, including the Group Three Gordon Stakes at Goodwood. His form was further boosted by runner-up Bellum Justum, who went on to win the Nashville Derby. Grosvenor Square, who demolished his rivals in the Irish St Leger Trial with a 20-length victory, is also being strongly considered by O’Brien.
While O’Brien’s Los Angeles has been left in the St Leger entries, he is reportedly being aimed at the Irish Champion Stakes, leaving room for Euphoric as a potential Ballydoyle runner.
David Menuisier’s Sunway, runner-up to Los Angeles in the Irish Derby, is another interesting contender. After a solid fourth-place finish in the King George, Menuisier is eager to see his charge compete again at the highest level. "He is all on track, we are very pleased with him, and we have confirmed him this morning," said Menuisier.
Owen Burrows’ Deira Mile, fourth in the Derby and narrowly beaten in a Listed race upon his return, also looks set to play a significant role in Saturday’s feature. Additionally, Andrew Balding’s Wild Waves and Charlie Johnston’s Align The Stars remain in the mix, although Bahrain Trophy winner Ancient Wisdom has been ruled out, with Godolphin choosing to focus on an autumn campaign for the talented colt.
As the final Classic of the season approaches, anticipation is building for a fiercely competitive race at Doncaster, with Beckett once again looking to upset the colts with his talented filly, You Got To Me.
