Jannik Sinner Claims Cincinnati Open Title, Eyes US Open Glory
World number one Jannik Sinner secured his fifth title of the season with a straight-sets victory over Frances Tiafoe in the Cincinnati Open final. The 23-year-old Italian defeated the American 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in one hour and 37 minutes, despite grappling with a persistent hip issue.
Sinner's triumph came after a tense first set, which was decided by a tie-break. The top seed's decisive play in the second set ensured a comfortable finish to the match. This victory marks Sinner as the youngest men's champion in Cincinnati since Andy Murray, who won the tournament in 2008 at the age of 21.
Reflecting on his win, Sinner said, "It was a very difficult week, tough week. I'm very happy about today's match." He added, "It was very tough mentally. Had such an amazing run here, and I tried to do my best today. We both were quite tired from the semi-finals."
Sinner’s Cincinnati success follows a stellar year, which began with his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January. He has since added titles in Rotterdam, Miami, and Halle to his impressive haul.
Looking ahead, Sinner's focus now shifts to the US Open, which begins on Monday at Flushing Meadows. "Now, for sure, it's important to recover, to be ready for New York," he stated. "This is our main goal here for this US swing."
Sinner's ongoing form and resilience make him a formidable contender as the final Grand Slam of the year approaches.
