Krejcikova secures her first Wimbledon Title

The legacy of Jana Novotna, the 1998 Wimbledon champion, has profoundly influenced the recent triumph of a former French Open champion. At 18, Barbora Krejcikova and her parents sought guidance from Novotna, a meeting that would change Krejcikova's life.

Novotna graciously took on the role of coach and mentor, forming a close bond with Krejcikova that lasted until Novotna's untimely death from ovarian cancer in 2017 at the age of 49.

Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Krejcikova shared in her on-court interview, "Knocking on her door that day changed my life. She believed in my potential and encouraged me to turn professional. Before she passed, she told me I could win a Grand Slam."

Krejcikova fulfilled Novotna's prediction by winning the French Open in 2021, a moment she described as unbelievable. "Winning the same trophy that Jana did in 1998 was a dream come true."

Now 28, Krejcikova opts for the comforting ambiance of the house where Novotna used to stay during Wimbledon, rather than staying in hotels. This connection to her mentor brings her solace.

Seeing her name alongside Novotna's on the women's champions board at Wimbledon was an emotional experience for Krejcikova, bringing her to tears as she stood with the trophy. "I believe she would be proud," Krejcikova said. "I think she would be really excited that I'm on the same board as she is because Wimbledon was incredibly special to her."
