Tatyana Heard on Filling the Void Left by Meg Jones in Red Roses Lineup
England centre Tatyana Heard has described the injury to her teammate Meg Jones as a "massive loss" for the Red Roses ahead of their Autumn fixtures. Jones, a key figure in England's squad, sustained a significant ankle injury that will see her miss the entire series of matches, including crucial encounters with France and New Zealand.
Jones's absence leaves a considerable gap in the Red Roses' midfield, where she has been a dynamic presence both on and off the field. Known for her versatility and leadership, Jones's injury presents a challenge for England, but also an opportunity for others to step up.
Heard, who plays for Gloucester-Hartpury, is expected to retain her position at inside centre for the upcoming friendlies. However, the 12 shirt now comes with added responsibility as she looks to forge a new partnership in the midfield. With outside centre up for grabs, Emily Scarratt, Phoebe Murray, and Katie Buchanan are all in contention to fill the void left by Jones.
"It creates opportunities for other people," Heard acknowledged. "It should be an interesting few weeks and an exciting time for whoever gets that opportunity."
The Red Roses are set to face France, a team they comfortably defeated 42-21 in April to secure their third consecutive Six Nations Grand Slam. The match will take place in Gloucester on Saturday, followed by a high-profile clash against world champions New Zealand at the newly named Allianz Stadium on 14 September.
Jones, who also plays for Leicester Tigers, is celebrated not only for her technical skills but also for her vibrant personality within the squad. Heard spoke to the impact of Jones’s absence, noting, "Meg is huge for us, her personality on and off the field is massive."
Heard also highlighted the challenge of adapting to new combinations in the centre, particularly in adjusting to the different communication styles of potential partners. "I think the biggest difference is the noise level; no one can be louder than Meg," she said. "Noticing one person's voice to another is a big thing. If I get used to hearing one person's voice, I can tune into that very easily. Having to listen more to tune into a different tone is a big difference for me."
Despite the uncertainty over who will line up alongside her, Heard made it clear that her role remains unchanged. "I'm just a one-trick pony, just a 12," she quipped, confirming her commitment to her position as inside centre.
As the Red Roses prepare for their Autumn campaign, all eyes will be on how Heard and her new centre partner adapt to the absence of Jones. With a challenging set of fixtures ahead, England will need to rely on both the experience and emerging talent within their squad to maintain their dominance on the international stage.
