Sussex Sharks Storm into T20 Blast Finals Day with Dominant Win Over Lancashire
In a spectacular display of T20 cricket, Sussex Sharks secured their place in the Vitality Blast Finals Day with an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Lancashire Lightning at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove. The Sharks’ win was powered by a disciplined bowling attack and a solid batting performance, cruising to their target with 35 balls to spare.
The highlight of the match was the return of England quick Jofra Archer, who marked his comeback in Sussex colours with a stellar performance. Archer, alongside fellow bowlers Ollie Robinson, James Coles, and Brad Currie, played a crucial role in dismantling the Lancashire innings. Archer claimed 2-20, while Robinson, Coles, and Currie each took two wickets as Lancashire were bowled out for just 114 in 15.3 overs.
Sussex’s bowlers made an early impact, with Robinson setting the tone by dismissing England opener Phil Salt with the very first ball of the match. Lancashire’s innings was soon in disarray as Currie removed Matty Hurst and former Sussex all-rounder Luke Wells in quick succession. By the time Archer entered the fray, Lancashire were already struggling at 35-3.
Keaton Jennings provided some resistance with a brisk 37 from 20 balls, but the Lightning’s innings collapsed dramatically as they lost five wickets for just 14 runs, falling to 73-8. Liam Livingstone attempted to salvage the situation with a powerful 43, hitting three sixes before being run out by Robinson’s direct hit, pushing the total past 100.
In response, Sussex’s chase was led by Harrison Ward, who struck six boundaries in a rapid 27 from 18 balls. Daniel Hughes, the leading run-scorer in this year’s competition, contributed a brisk 35 off 22 balls, taking his season tally to 595 runs before being bowled by Livingstone. The chase was completed by Tom Clark (24 not out) and Coles (27 not out), ensuring Sussex reached their target with ease.
This victory secures Sussex’s sixth appearance at the T20 Blast Finals Day, where they will join Surrey at Edgbaston on 14 September. The result highlights a continued trend of disappointment for the North Group sides, with none reaching last season’s Finals Day. For Sussex, however, it marks a triumphant return to the spotlight, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting conclusion to the T20 Blast season.
