Stockport Assistant Coach Andy Mangan Denied Real Madrid Move After Work Permit Rejection
Stockport County assistant coach Andy Mangan's dream move to Spanish giants Real Madrid has been halted after his work permit application was rejected by the Spanish government. The 38-year-old former striker, who was on the verge of joining Madrid’s coaching staff under the legendary Carlo Ancelotti, saw the switch fall through due to visa complications.
Mangan had been lined up to work with Ancelotti's son, Davide, who is part of the coaching setup at the La Liga club. The two had developed a close relationship while Mangan pursued his UEFA coaching badges, with Davide reportedly keen to bring him into the fold at the Bernabéu. However, the move, which could have taken up to nine months for approval, was blocked, leaving Mangan unable to make the high-profile switch.
Mangan had only recently joined Stockport County this summer after helping them achieve promotion from League Two under manager Dave Challinor. The Hatters have enjoyed an impressive start to their League One campaign, currently sitting unbeaten and second after four matches.
Known for his playing career in the lower leagues, Mangan featured for clubs like Tranmere Rovers, Forest Green Rovers, and Accrington Stanley, and boasts three promotions from the National League. After retiring, he transitioned into coaching and worked with Joey Barton at Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers, where he served as first-team coach. Mangan briefly took over as caretaker manager at Bristol Rovers following Barton's departure in 2023.
Despite the setback, Mangan continues to be a key figure in Stockport's success this season. His failed move to one of the biggest clubs in world football is a significant blow but serves as a reminder of the intricacies and challenges of navigating international employment regulations. Stockport fans, however, will be relieved to see him stay at Edgeley Park for now as the club pushes for back-to-back promotions.
Mangan’s work ethic and coaching ability have already garnered attention, and while the Real Madrid move has been shelved, it is likely that bigger opportunities will come his way in the future.
