Brazil's World Cup Qualifying Struggles Continue with 1-0 Loss to Paraguay

Brazil's rocky road to the 2026 World Cup took another hit as they suffered their fourth defeat in five qualifiers, losing 1-0 to Paraguay in Asuncion. Diego Gomez of Inter Miami scored the decisive goal in the 20th minute, while Brazil failed to register a shot on target in a lackluster first half.

Despite a star-studded lineup featuring Alisson in goal, Bruno Guimaraes in midfield, and an attacking trio of Rodrygo, Endrick, and Vinicius Jr, the five-time world champions were unable to break down a resolute Paraguay side. The defeat leaves Brazil in fifth place in the South American qualifying standings with just three wins from eight games.

Speaking to Brazilian broadcaster Globo, Vinicius Jr apologized to the fans, acknowledging the difficult period the team is going through. "I want to apologize to the fans. I know it's a difficult time, but we just want to improve," said the 24-year-old winger, who has struggled to replicate his club form for the national team. Despite scoring over 20 goals in each of the last three seasons for Real Madrid, Vinicius has only found the net five times in 35 caps for Brazil.

"I know my potential and what I can do for the national team," Vinicius added. "But when you don't have confidence, you don't get goals."

Brazil's underwhelming performance in Asuncion highlights the challenges faced by manager Dorival Jr, who was appointed in January and saw his team exit the Copa America in the quarter-finals earlier this year. Defender Marquinhos, speaking after the game, admitted that the team is struggling to find form and confidence under the new coach.

"The coach is still figuring out the best way for us to play, and that's reflected in the result," Marquinhos said. "There are a lot of new players, and we are lacking confidence. Qualifying isn't easy, it's a difficult time, and we have to know how to manage it. It's a time of transition, and we're not feeling confident. We're going to work hard, getting results on the pitch is the best answer."

With only three wins from their first eight games, Brazil's path to the 2026 World Cup is looking increasingly precarious. While they remain in the top five of the qualifying table, a turnaround in form is urgently needed if they are to secure their place in the tournament and restore confidence in the national team.
