Sandro Tonali Makes Comeback as Newcastle Progress in Carabao Cup
Sandro Tonali made a notable return to football after a 10-month suspension, playing a key role in Newcastle United's Carabao Cup victory over Nottingham Forest, which was decided on penalties.
The match at the City Ground saw Newcastle advance after a tense shootout, with Sean Longstaff converting the decisive penalty. Nottingham Forest’s Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi both missed their penalty attempts, sealing the Magpies' progress to the next round.
Tonali, who was serving a long ban for breaching betting rules, made his comeback with a solid 60-minute performance before being substituted. His return was a significant moment for Newcastle, as the Italy midfielder was instrumental in their midfield.
The game started brightly for Newcastle, with Joe Willock giving them the lead just 18 seconds in, tapping in a rebound after Forest’s Carlos Miguel parried a shot from Alexander Isak. Isak also had a chance to double Newcastle's lead in the third minute, but Miguel made a crucial save.
However, the match saw a setback for Newcastle when Willock, who had previously missed the end of last season due to an Achilles injury, was forced off with what appeared to be a thigh injury.
Nottingham Forest equalized with a spectacular half-volley from Jota Silva, marking his first goal and start for the club. Silva's effort rebounded off the woodwork before finding the net. Forest fielded several debutants, including Brazilian goalkeeper Miguel, teenage German right-back Eric da Silva Moreira, Aston Villa loanee Alex Moreno, and Paraguay forward Ramon Sosa.
Newcastle had additional chances to clinch victory during regular time, with Dan Burn, Harvey Barnes, Lewis Hall, and Anthony Gordon all going close. Elliot Anderson, a summer signing from Newcastle now with Forest, nearly scored against his former club but saw his lob miss the target.
In the penalty shootout, Joelinton’s attempt was saved by Miguel, but Newcastle's other shooters made no mistake, securing their place in the third round. They will face League Two side AFC Wimbledon away in the next round of the competition.
