Alexei Popyrin Claims Maiden Masters 1000 Title in Montreal
Australian Alexei Popyrin made history at the Canadian Open in Montreal, securing his first ATP Masters 1000 title with a commanding 6-2 6-4 victory over world number six Andrey Rublev. The triumph marks the first time an Australian has won a Masters 1000 trophy since Lleyton Hewitt at Indian Wells 21 years ago.
The 25-year-old Popyrin, who entered the tournament ranked 62nd, delivered a standout performance throughout the week. His path to the final included victories over five top-20 opponents, culminating in a decisive win against Rublev, who had previously claimed the Madrid Open title earlier this season.
“This means so much, it means the world,” Popyrin said after his win. “All the hard work we've put in over the last couple of years has paid off. Everyone around me has sacrificed so much of their lives for me. For me to win this for them is amazing.” An emotional Popyrin, who also competed at the Paris Olympics, expressed his disbelief by writing "What just happened!" on the TV camera lens.
In contrast, Rublev, who had defeated world number one Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals, struggled to maintain his composure during the final, exhibiting frustration with his errors and displaying visible agitation.
Jessica Pegula Defends Canadian Open Title
In the women’s tournament in Toronto, defending champion Jessica Pegula secured her third WTA 1000 title with a 6-3 2-6 6-1 victory over fellow American Amanda Anisimova. The win not only marked Pegula’s second consecutive Canadian Open title but also made her the first woman to achieve back-to-back victories at the event since Martina Hingis in 1999-2000.
Pegula, ranked sixth in the world, completed her title defense in one hour and 27 minutes. Reflecting on her achievement, Pegula said, “I know everyone's talking about my record and all this stuff, but it's nice to be able to get through the week and to back it up. So, just super excited, I mean, an honour, really.”
The Canadian Open showcased remarkable performances from both Popyrin and Pegula, affirming their places among the elite in tennis.
