On day three of the third Test between England and Sri Lanka at The Kia Oval, the tourists positioned themselves strongly for a potential victory, needing 125 runs with nine wickets in hand to chase a target of 219.

By the end of the third day’s play, Sri Lanka had scored 94-1, with Pathum Nissanka not out on 53. The visitors were well on their way, showing resilience and skill after England's challenging second innings. Earlier, Sri Lanka had managed 263 in their first innings, trailing England’s 325 by 62 runs.

Sri Lanka’s innings was notably bolstered by a crucial partnership between Kamindu Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva, who added 127 runs for the sixth wicket. Mendis scored 64, and de Silva contributed 69. Asitha Fernando also added 11 runs, but Sri Lanka's innings eventually came to a close with England’s Josh Hull and Olly Stone each taking three wickets.

England began their second innings with some difficulties, failing to capitalize on their earlier advantage. A late rally by Jamie Smith, who scored a brisk 67, and a supporting 10 from Stone, helped England reach a total of 156. Lahiru Kumara led Sri Lanka’s bowling efforts with 4-21, while other bowlers also made significant contributions.

As England set a target of 219, Sri Lanka started their chase with confidence. Dimuth Karunaratne's dismissal for 8 and Kusal Mendis's 30, along with Nissanka’s unbeaten 53, set the stage for a thrilling final day. Sri Lanka had to complete their chase with nine wickets remaining, needing an additional 125 runs.

The fourth day promises to be a crucial one as Sri Lanka aims to capitalize on their position and secure a victory, while England will need to dig deep to overturn the deficit and achieve a win.
