Somerset’s Lewis Gregory Eyes Historic Treble as Finals Day Beckons

Somerset captain Lewis Gregory has declared that his team’s impressive form this season “stands for nothing” unless they secure silverware, as they prepare for another T20 Finals Day and chase glory across three competitions. After overcoming Northamptonshire by 17 runs to reach their fourth consecutive T20 Finals Day, Somerset are aiming to become the first team in history to successfully defend their T20 Blast title.

Gregory, speaking ahead of their semi-final clash with Surrey on 14 September, emphasized the importance of converting their strong performances into trophies. “We’ve been outstanding for five months of the year, but that stands for nothing if we don’t win anything,” Gregory told BBC Radio Somerset. “We’re here to win trophies, and we’ve given ourselves an opportunity to do that across three formats, which is amazing.”

Somerset’s 2023 season has been nothing short of remarkable. Already T20 Blast champions last year, the West Country side is also in the final of the One-Day Cup, where they will face Glamorgan on 22 September. On top of that, they remain in contention for the County Championship title, trailing Division One leaders Surrey with two matches left to play, including a crucial head-to-head fixture starting Monday.

Reflecting on the team’s journey, Gregory said: “We set out at the start of the year with the goal of giving ourselves the best chance to win things in September, and now we’ve got that chance across all three formats.”

Their path to back-to-back T20 Blast titles, however, goes through familiar foes Surrey, who Somerset defeated in last year’s semi-final. Gregory is confident about his side’s ability to rise to the occasion once more. “We go into [Finals Day] with immense confidence. We’ve got match-winners throughout the squad, and I believe in those big moments, our players will step up.”

Somerset’s opportunity to add to their recent success comes after breaking an 18-year T20 trophy drought last season, with their previous victory dating back to 2005. Now, with a treble in sight, Gregory is determined to keep his team focused on the task at hand. “Surrey are a bloody good team, and we’ll need to be at our best to beat them, but I back us to do it.”

With Finals Day, the One-Day Cup final, and a thrilling conclusion to the County Championship still ahead, Somerset’s season is reaching a fever pitch. Should they lift multiple trophies, it would mark one of the greatest campaigns in the club’s history, and Lewis Gregory will be leading from the front as they chase cricketing immortality.
