Sri Lanka Football Federation Election Rescheduled to September 29 Following FIFA Directive
The election for the Sri Lanka Football Federation (FFSL) has been rescheduled to September 29, 2024, following a directive from FIFA. This decision was confirmed during an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held at the Foundation Institute on August 14.
Originally slated for September 16, the election was postponed after FIFA issued a letter on August 12, outlining a new electoral roadmap. According to FIFA's instructions, the deadline for submitting nominations was set for August 19, with the official list of candidates to be announced on August 29.
Following the announcement, the period for filing objections will be from September 1 to September 3, with the final list of candidates to be released on September 4.
In addition to the new election dates, a three-member election committee was appointed to oversee the process. This committee is chaired by Former retired High Court Judge U.L.M. Majeed, with Bandula Atapattu and retired General Upali Gunasekara serving as the other members.
This rescheduling comes amid a series of controversies surrounding Sri Lanka Football, including prior suspension by FIFA and conditions imposed by the global football governing body to lift the ban. The new electoral roadmap is expected to ensure transparency and adherence to FIFA's standards as Sri Lanka Football navigates its path back to stability.
This election is critical for the future of football in Sri Lanka, as the country looks to rebuild its football infrastructure and regain its standing on the international stage, particularly in the lead-up to the World Cup qualifiers.
