Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Ends Partnership with Roger Varian as Leading Owner Removes All Horses
Roger Varian has announced that Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, a major supporter of his Carlburg Stables in Newmarket, has withdrawn all 10 horses from training with the stable. The decision marks the end of a successful nine-year collaboration that saw numerous high-profile victories.
During their partnership, Varian and Sheikh Obaid celebrated significant triumphs, including seven Group One wins. Among the standout performers under Varian’s care was Postponed, a horse that captured the Sheema Classic, Coronation Cup, and Juddmonte International in 2016, donning the renowned yellow silks with black spots.
In a statement on www.varianstable.com, Varian expressed his gratitude and acknowledged the impact of Sheikh Obaid’s support. “I can confirm that Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum has ended his support of my stable. The 10 horses that he currently had in training with me departed today,” Varian said.
He continued: “I would like to convey my sincere thanks to Sheikh Obaid for all the opportunities that he has given me over the last nine years. Together we have had a long and fruitful association, enjoying many wonderful days in Britain – not least at Royal Ascot – and overseas, including seven Group Ones.”
Varian praised Sheikh Obaid as a passionate and committed supporter of racing and extended his best wishes for the future. Despite this significant change, Varian remains optimistic about the future of Carlburg Stables. “It is important for me to add that myself and the team here at Carlburg remain fully focused on continuing our own successful season,” he assured.
The stable continues to house notable talent, including top-class miler Charyn and British Classic winner Elmalka, among other promising horses. Varian expressed gratitude to all current owners and is committed to delivering results in the coming months and years.
