Chenelle Ellis Relishes European Adventure with Asfoora: The Summer of a Lifetime

This summer has been nothing short of extraordinary for Chenelle Ellis, the dedicated groom of Australian mare Asfoora, who has been on an unforgettable European journey. Ellis, who was handpicked by trainer Henry Dwyer to accompany Asfoora on her travels, has embraced the experience with boundless enthusiasm and pride.

The journey began with a spectacular win at Royal Ascot in the King Charles III Stakes, a moment that captured the hearts of racing fans worldwide. The celebration continued with a spirited performance at Goodwood, where Asfoora, despite falling to Big Evs in the King George Qatar Stakes, showed her mettle in a thrilling contest.

For Ellis, the opportunity to be part of Asfoora's European campaign has been a dream come true. "It’s been absolutely amazing since we’ve brought her over here," Ellis said. "She’s been unreal and I’m so happy and proud of her."

Ellis, who could have spent the Australian winter in the cold and wet conditions of Ballarat, is instead enjoying the vibrant racing scene in Europe. “When Henry asked me to come over, it was a no-brainer to say yes,” she explained. “The summer here has been good, and it just makes it so much better when you have a horse who has been competitive in these great races.”

The bond between Ellis and Asfoora is evident, with Ellis referring to the mare as her "best friend" and expressing gratitude for the chance to be involved in such a remarkable experience. “I love being here and love doing her in the morning,” she said. “To think I grew up with ponies and now I’m here with a horse like her—it’s just unreal.”

The future holds exciting possibilities for Asfoora, with potential races in Ireland, France, and even the US on the horizon. Ellis is eagerly anticipating the next chapter, starting with the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes at York. “We’re very happy and she’s in a very good spot going into York,” Ellis remarked.

The success of Asfoora’s European tour has been bolstered by the support of Amy Murphy’s Southgate Stables in Newmarket. Ellis has received invaluable help from Murphy and her husband, former jockey Lemos De Sousa, as well as from jockey Oisin Murphy.

Reflecting on their triumph at Ascot, Ellis described the experience as surreal. “To go to Ascot—the experience, the atmosphere, it was just unreal,” she said. “A lot of people have asked me what the highlight of the day was, but it just has to be her winning.”

Asfoora’s journey has not only been a personal triumph for Ellis but also a testament to the enduring spirit of international racing. With more potential adventures ahead, the bond between Ellis and Asfoora promises to continue making memories that will last a lifetime.
