Rain Washes Out Final Group Game in The Hundred Women's Competition
The final group game of The Hundred women's competition between Birmingham Phoenix and Manchester Originals ended without a result due to persistent rain at Edgbaston. With both teams already out of contention for the play-offs, the match provided little more than a brief glimpse of potential before the weather intervened.
Only 70 balls were bowled before the rain brought proceedings to a halt. Birmingham Phoenix were in a strong position at 98-2, with Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry leading the charge. Perry remained unbeaten on 45 from 39 balls, showing her form with the bat as Phoenix looked poised to set a challenging total.
Phoenix’s progress was marked by notable contributions from their bowlers as well. England’s Lauren Filer had earlier removed opener Sterre Kalis for 18 with a decisive lbw decision, and seamer Phoebe Graham accounted for Fran Wilson, who managed 14 runs before her dismissal.
Despite the promising performance in the match, Birmingham Phoenix's campaign has been one of mixed fortunes. After a disappointing 2023 season, the Phoenix improved in this year’s competition, securing three wins but finishing seventh in the table.
Manchester Originals also faced a season of inconsistency, managing three wins and four losses. Their position in the table was marginally better than Phoenix’s, thanks to a superior net run-rate.
As the rain put an end to any further play, the focus shifts to the next stage of The Hundred, where the teams that have qualified for the play-offs will battle for the title. For Phoenix and Originals, the season ends with reflections on performances and plans for improvement ahead of the next campaign.
