Gaby Lewis Leads Ireland’s Optimistic Push Ahead of ODI Series Against Sri Lanka
Ireland’s Gaby Lewis has expressed high spirits and confidence within the squad as they prepare for their ODI series against Sri Lanka at Stormont. The series follows a thrilling conclusion to their T20 series, which saw Lewis score a brilliant 119 in Dublin, leading Ireland to a seven-run victory and leveling the series 1-1.
Lewis’s knock was significant not only for its impact but also because it marked her first T20 century against a full member team of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This victory was Ireland’s first over Sri Lanka in T20 cricket, highlighting a historic achievement for the Irish side.
With the focus now shifting to the ODI series, the teams head to Belfast for the first of three matches starting on Friday. Despite the initial loss in the T20 series opener, Lewis described the squad’s mood as “brilliant,” fueled by their recent success and resilience.
"After the win on Tuesday, we're all absolutely buzzing," Lewis said. "After a loss in the first match and then bouncing back, the mood is great. It’s brilliant."
Ireland will be facing a Sri Lankan team known for its strong spin attack, but Lewis is confident in her team’s preparations and strategies. "They have a lot of spinners, but we've had really good prep coming into this series. We have plans, we're ready to go, and I back us as a team."
In a notable change, Lewis has been promoted to captain for the series in the absence of Laura Delany, who is sidelined with an ankle injury sustained during Tuesday's match. Una Raymond-Hoey is also out due to injury, with Sarah Forbes joining the squad as her replacement.
Reflecting on her recent form, Lewis, who hit 17 fours and two sixes in her century knock, shared her excitement for the ODI format. "In the last year or two, I've preferred the longer format. You don’t have to be as attacking; I can trust my natural instincts more as opposed to being premeditated and perhaps thinking ahead of the bowler."
As Ireland gears up for the ODIs, Lewis’s enthusiasm and leadership will be crucial in driving the team’s performance. The series presents an opportunity for Ireland to build on their recent success and further establish themselves on the international stage.
