Louis Rees-Zammit Joins Jacksonville Jaguars’ Practice Squad After Chiefs Stint

In a surprising move, former Wales rugby union star Louis Rees-Zammit has been added to the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad, following his pre-season stint with the Kansas City Chiefs. Rees-Zammit, who transitioned to American football through the NFL's International Player Pathway program (IPP), was initially signed by the Chiefs as a running back but missed out on their final 53-man roster.

The 23-year-old, who made headlines earlier this year by leaving his rugby career behind to pursue a dream in the NFL, impressed during his time with the Chiefs, even making his American football debut against the Jaguars in a pre-season game. Despite his strong showing, Rees-Zammit was placed on waivers after failing to make the Chiefs' regular-season roster, which allowed other teams to sign him.

Jacksonville quickly seized the opportunity, adding Rees-Zammit to their practice squad as a wide receiver. The move came as a surprise to many, as it was widely expected that Rees-Zammit would continue his development with Kansas City under his three-year contract. However, the Jaguars, known for their strong presence in the UK, saw potential in the former rugby wing and opted to bring him to Florida.

Rees-Zammit's transition from rugby to American football has been a closely watched journey. The former British and Irish Lion shocked the rugby world in January when he announced his decision to leave Wales and Gloucester to chase an NFL career. His participation in the IPP pro day in March drew significant attention, with several NFL franchises expressing interest in the speedy athlete.

While Rees-Zammit will begin his NFL career on the practice squad, he remains eligible for elevation to the regular roster should the Jaguars need his services during the season. Jacksonville, a team with a growing fan base in the UK, will play twice in London this season, facing the Chicago Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and hosting the New England Patriots at Wembley.

For Rees-Zammit, the move to Jacksonville represents the next step in his ambitious journey to establish himself in the NFL. With the Jaguars, he will have the opportunity to continue refining his skills and working towards his ultimate goal of playing in an NFL game.
