Jannik Sinner Cleared After Positive Doping Tests, Focuses on US Open Challenge

World number one Jannik Sinner has been exonerated of any wrongdoing after testing positive for a banned substance twice in March, allowing him to now fully concentrate on his quest for US Open glory. The 22-year-old Italian sensation faced a turbulent few months after traces of clostebol, a prohibited steroid, were found in his system during the Indian Wells Masters. However, after a thorough investigation, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) concluded that Sinner was inadvertently contaminated by his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, clearing him of any intentional doping violation.

Sinner first tested positive for low levels of a metabolite of clostebol following his quarter-final victory at Indian Wells, one of the premier events on the ATP calendar. Eight days later, a second test also revealed trace amounts of the same substance. Clostebol is a steroid typically used in products to treat swelling and skin irritation but remains on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of banned substances due to its muscle-building properties.

The ITIA’s investigation revealed that Naldi had been applying an over-the-counter spray containing clostebol to treat a cut on his own hand before proceeding to carry out treatment sessions on Sinner. This unintentional contamination was accepted as the source of the positive tests. As a result, Sinner was provisionally suspended but was allowed to continue competing after successfully challenging the suspension.

An independent tribunal ruled last week that Sinner bore no fault or negligence in the incident. Nevertheless, he will lose the ranking points and prize money earned from his impressive semi-final run at Indian Wells.

Speaking on the matter, Sinner expressed his relief at moving past the ordeal. "I will now put this challenging and deeply unfortunate period behind me," he said in a statement. "I will continue to do everything I can to ensure I comply with the ITIA's anti-doping programme. I have a team around me that are meticulous in their own compliance."

Despite the disruption, Sinner’s focus now shifts to the upcoming US Open, where he will be the top seed as he chases his first Grand Slam title. The Italian star has enjoyed a stellar season, including a title win at the Australian Open, and is among the favorites in New York.
