Brits Harris and Miyazaki Advance in US Open Qualifying
Britain’s Billy Harris and Lily Miyazaki made strong starts to their US Open qualifying campaigns, each securing hard-fought victories to progress to the second round in New York.
Harris, who gained valuable experience playing in the main draw at Wimbledon in July, battled past Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo in a three-set thriller. The 28-year-old demonstrated his resilience and composure, clinching a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory to keep his hopes of making a debut in the US Open main draw alive.
Meanwhile, Miyazaki, who is no stranger to the challenges of Flushing Meadows, produced a convincing 6-2, 6-4 win over Slovenia’s Dalila Jakupovic. The British-Japanese player reached the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time in New York last year after successfully navigating all three qualifying rounds. Her solid display against Jakupovic puts her one step closer to repeating that feat and securing a spot among the elite once again.
While Harris and Miyazaki celebrated their victories, it was a disappointing day for Oliver Crawford, who was defeated 6-4, 6-4 by American JJ Wolf. However, more British talent will have the opportunity to advance as Jan Choinski and Fran Jones are set to play their opening matches later today.
The pair will aim to join Harris, Miyazaki, and fellow Brits Heather Watson, Paul Jubb, and Sonay Kartal, who all moved into the second round on Monday. Watson faces a challenging match against second seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Wednesday, while Jubb is set to take on Finland’s Otto Virtanen, and Kartal will meet Switzerland’s Simona Waltert.
As the competition heats up in the Big Apple, British hopes remain high with several players making positive strides towards earning a place in the final Grand Slam of the season.
