Alastair Chalmers Targets Gold for Guernsey After Paris Olympics Setback

Alastair Chalmers has set his sights on making history for Guernsey, aiming to become the island's first Commonwealth Games athletics gold medallist following a dramatic exit from the Paris Olympics. The 24-year-old hurdler suffered a setback in the 400m hurdles semi-finals when he fell three-quarters of the way through the race, dashing his hopes for a medal in Paris.

Chalmers, who secured a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022, is determined to leverage his experience and make it to the top of the podium at the next Games. With speculation that Glasgow could replace Victoria, Australia as the host city, Chalmers is ready to seize the opportunity.

"I want to win the Commonwealth Games for Guernsey and I want to make the final in the Europeans," Chalmers told BBC Radio Guernsey. His ambition extends beyond the Commonwealth Games; he is also focused on qualifying for the finals at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

"I really want to make that final in Los Angeles. I think give me another four years and I will progress. So much can happen in four years; you’ve got to be healthy, you’ve got to be fit, and you’ve got to be in a good place," he added.

Chalmers, who set a personal best to qualify for Paris 2024, remains optimistic about his future, driven by his recent experiences and unwavering commitment to his sport.
