Olympic Silver Medallist Marketa Vondrousova Withdraws from Paris 2024 Due to Hand Injury

Prague — Marketa Vondrousova, the Olympic silver medallist and 2023 Wimbledon champion, has announced her withdrawal from the Paris 2024 Games due to a hand injury. The 25-year-old Czech star made the difficult decision following her unexpected first-round exit at Wimbledon earlier this month.

Vondrousova's early departure from Wimbledon was a shock to the tennis world. She became the first reigning Wimbledon ladies' singles champion to lose in the first round since Steffi Graf's defeat by Lori McNeil in 1994, falling to Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

In a heartfelt message posted on her Instagram, Vondrousova explained her decision to sit out this summer's Olympic Games, expressing her disappointment and outlining her focus on recovery and preparation for the US Open, which begins on August 26.

"It’s with a heavy heart that I announce my withdrawal from the Paris 2024 Games," Vondrousova wrote. "After consulting with my medical team, we’ve decided that the best course of action is to focus on my recovery and ensure I’m fully fit for the US Open. I’m incredibly proud of my silver medal from Tokyo 2020 and will be cheering on my fellow athletes in Paris."

Vondrousova's silver medal in Tokyo 2020 was a significant achievement in her career, highlighting her talent on the international stage. Her absence from Paris 2024 will undoubtedly be felt, but her decision underscores the importance of prioritizing long-term health and career sustainability.

The tennis community and her fans have rallied around her, offering support and wishing her a speedy recovery. As she aims to return to peak form for the upcoming US Open, Vondrousova's resilience and dedication continue to inspire.

The US Open will present a crucial opportunity for Vondrousova to reclaim her competitive edge and demonstrate her prowess on the court. Tennis enthusiasts worldwide will be eagerly watching her progress, hopeful for her successful return to the sport she loves.
