Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Shatters Records, Boosts Game Pass Subscriptions and Franchise Sales to New Heights
Franchise Surpasses 500 Million Units as Microsoft Celebrates Unprecedented Xbox Milestone
In a historic achievement for both the Call of Duty franchise and Microsoft, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has set a new benchmark as the most successful launch in the franchise's history. Microsoft’s latest earnings call for Q1 2025 underscored this milestone, with CEO Satya Nadella announcing record-breaking numbers for day-one players and Game Pass subscriptions fueled by the release.
This installment, marking the first Activision Blizzard title to launch simultaneously on Game Pass, has sparked substantial engagement on Xbox, alongside a 60% year-over-year increase in unit sales across PlayStation and Steam.
“This reflects our commitment to meeting gamers where they are, allowing them to experience a broader range of games across the platforms and devices they prefer,” Nadella stated, emphasizing Microsoft's mission to make gaming accessible across diverse screens.
Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood elaborated on the distinct launch model, pointing out the impact of Game Pass availability and the title’s online connectivity requirement. “For Game Pass players, subscription revenue is spread over time,” she explained. “Even for standalone purchases, revenue recognition will follow a similar model, as the game requires a continuous online connection.”
The remarkable performance has bolstered Microsoft's Q1 earnings, with Xbox content and services revenue surging 61% compared to the previous year. This growth comes on the heels of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023, a move that overcame significant regulatory scrutiny across the UK, EU, and US.
As part of this acquisition, Microsoft granted Ubisoft the cloud streaming rights for Call of Duty and other Activision Blizzard titles over the next 15 years. Microsoft also inked agreements with Sony and Nintendo, ensuring Call of Duty remains accessible on those platforms for the next decade.
Industry analysts predict that Black Ops 6 could drive a 2.5 to 4 million boost in Game Pass subscribers, noting that its availability on Game Pass may slightly temper direct game sales.
In an additional milestone, Activision reported to The Washington Post that, with the latest release, the Call of Duty franchise has now surpassed 500 million units sold globally. This achievement places it among the best-selling franchises in gaming history, joining the ranks of Tetris and Pokémon, although it remains just behind the Mario series in overall sales.
