Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha has shattered the world record in a remarkable victory at the Valencia Half Marathon.
Kejelcha, who also set the indoor mile world record in Boston in 2019, completed the race in a stunning 57 minutes and 30 seconds, despite wet conditions in Valencia, Spain. This time shaved one second off the previous record set by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon three years prior.
The women’s race saw Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich claim victory, recording an impressive time of 63:04, placing her second on the all-time world rankings list.
In only his sixth career half marathon, Kejelcha ran strategically, following the pacemakers early on and making his move at the three-kilometer mark. He eventually broke away from Kenyan contenders Daniel Mateiko and Isaia Kipkoech to secure the win.
Known for his versatility, Kejelcha is also a two-time world indoor 3000m champion, although he placed sixth in the 10,000m final at the Paris Olympics earlier this year.
