Inspiral Eyes Final Curtain Call in Sun Chariot Stakes

Inspiral, the star mare trained by John and Thady Gosden, has been given the green light for what could be the final race of her illustrious career in the Virgin Bet Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket early next month. The daughter of the legendary Frankel is set to defend the title she claimed in spectacular fashion last year, in what was the middle leg of a memorable Group One treble that culminated in victory at the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita.

While a return to the US for this year’s Breeders’ Cup, held at Del Mar, hasn’t been ruled out entirely, connections suggest the Sun Chariot may well be the swan song for a mare who has consistently triumphed at the highest level across three racing seasons. Chris Richardson, managing director of owners Cheveley Park Stud, hinted that Inspiral’s racing days are likely winding down, though she remains in top form.

“She’s fine and green for go, all being well – and subject to ground – for Newmarket and the Sun Chariot, and we’ll see what happens there,” said Richardson. “I think she’s happier back at a mile, but you can’t miss the break and give the field five lengths in those top-level Group One races. She’s her own personality and she’s probably telling us she’s ready to have babies, but it makes sense to have one more swansong – and if she surprises us, who knows? We haven’t discounted America, but I think it’s unlikely.”

While Inspiral prepares for what could be her farewell, Cheveley Park’s future prospects in the fillies department are looking bright. Two fillies trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Formal and Anna Swan, are emerging talents who have caught the eye early in their careers. Formal recently delivered a commanding performance at Leicester, signaling she could be in line for bigger targets before the season closes, while Anna Swan remains a work in progress after impressing at Yarmouth on her debut.

“Anna Swan just needs a bit more time after her last run, and we’re being patient with her,” Richardson noted. “No one is more patient than Sir Michael, and it’s exciting to have a couple of promising fillies.”

Cheveley Park’s hopes also extend to Unequal Love, trained by William Haggas, who impressed at Royal Ascot earlier this year. Following a strong third-place finish in the Group One Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock, she is set to return to Ascot for the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes on October 19.

“We were delighted with Unequal Love’s performance at Haydock,” added Richardson. “She will probably go to Ascot now.”

As Inspiral prepares for her potential final bow, the next generation of Cheveley Park stars is ready to step into the spotlight, continuing the stud’s proud tradition of excellence.
