Southampton Secure Mateus Fernandes for £15m from Sporting Lisbon
Southampton have bolstered their midfield with the signing of Mateus Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon for a fee believed to be around £15 million. The Portugal Under-21 international has inked a five-year contract with the Saints.
Fernandes, 20, joins Southampton after a season on loan at Estoril, where he made 28 appearances in the Primeira Liga. Although he featured just five times for Sporting's first team, his performances during his loan spell have evidently caught the eye of Southampton's scouting team.
"I'm very happy to be here - it's a dream come true to come to England and play in the Premier League," Fernandes said upon his arrival. "It's the best league in the world, in my opinion. It has the best coaches, the best players, the best teams. It's good for me, for my growth and I'm happy."
Southampton manager Russell Martin expressed enthusiasm about the new addition, highlighting Fernandes' "key attributes" that will be vital for the club in the Premier League. "Mateus is a player we have been monitoring for a while and someone we are really excited about," Martin added.
Fernandes' arrival comes as Southampton prepare for their next Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 15:00 BST. The club's investment in Fernandes underscores their ambition to strengthen their squad and make a significant impact in the top flight this season.
