Millwall Edge Past Portsmouth to Reach Carabao Cup Second Round
Romain Esse’s composed finish secured Millwall a 1-0 win over Portsmouth, propelling the Lions into the Carabao Cup second round for the first time in three years. The victory marked a significant step forward for Millwall, who had suffered early exits in the previous two seasons, including a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Reading last year and a loss to Cambridge the year before.
Portsmouth started the match brightly at Fratton Park and nearly took the lead early on when Ryley Towler’s awkward attempt from a free-kick sailed just over the bar. However, it was Millwall who seized control in the 13th minute. George Honeyman’s relentless pressure on the edge of the Portsmouth box forced a turnover, allowing the 19-year-old Esse to take possession and calmly slot the ball into the bottom corner.
The first half saw both teams field significantly altered lineups, with a total of 13 changes from their Championship openers, leading to a somewhat disjointed contest. Despite this, Millwall maintained their narrow lead heading into the break.
The second half brought more excitement, with Portsmouth pushing for an equalizer. Terry Devlin came close, mistakenly celebrating after his header hit the side-netting. At the other end, Honeyman was denied a goal by a superb save from Pompey goalkeeper Will Norris, who used his feet to keep his team in the game.
Esse, who had already made his mark with the decisive goal, nearly doubled Millwall’s lead when he curled a shot just over the bar. As the match wore on, Portsmouth had late chances through Callum Lang and Towler, but they were unable to find the back of the net and force a penalty shootout.
Millwall’s victory not only ends their recent run of poor Carabao Cup performances but also gives them momentum as they look to build on this success in the competition. Portsmouth, meanwhile, will be left to rue their missed opportunities as they bow out of the tournament in the first round.
