Jannik Sinner Eliminated by Andrey Rublev in Canadian Open Quarter-Finals

World number one Jannik Sinner was knocked out of the Canadian Open quarter-finals by Russia’s Andrey Rublev in a three-set battle that ended 6-3 1-6 6-2. The match, held in Montreal, was disrupted by rain, but Rublev's resilience secured him a place in the semi-finals.

Sinner, who has been struggling with a right hip injury, showed signs of discomfort throughout the match. The 22-year-old frequently massaged his hip, raising concerns about his fitness ahead of the US Open, which begins in just two weeks. Despite the injury, Sinner put up a strong fight, but Rublev, ranked eighth in the world, capitalized on the opportunity.

Rublev praised Sinner's performance, stating, "It was a really great match of mine. Jannik is an amazing player and he has played unbelievably for two years. I was just hoping I would be able to fight with him."

Both players had competed in their last-16 matches earlier on the same day, with Sinner defeating Alejandro Tabilo 6-4 6-3, and Rublev overcoming Brandon Nakashima 6-2 6-2. In the semi-finals, Rublev will face Matteo Arnaldi, who defeated Kei Nishikori 6-4 7-5.

In the women’s tournament in Toronto, defending champion Jessica Pegula advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-4 7-5 victory over Peyton Stearns. Pegula will face Diana Shnaider, who won a three-set match against Liudmila Samsonova, 4-6 6-1 6-4.

Amanda Anisimova, returning to tennis after a nine-month break for mental health reasons, upset Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka with a commanding 6-4 6-2 win. Anisimova will meet Emma Navarro in the semi-finals after Navarro defeated Taylor Townsend 6-3 7-6 (7-5).

The US Open in New York is set to start on August 26.
