Jack Draper Reflects on Integrity Questioning After Controversial Cincinnati Open Victory
British number one Jack Draper has admitted the criticism he faced following his controversial win over Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Cincinnati Open was “difficult” to handle. The 22-year-old found himself under scrutiny after a crucial point in his match against the Canadian, during which the umpire missed the ball hitting the ground before Draper struck it for a match-winning shot.
Replays appeared to confirm Auger-Aliassime’s argument that the ball had hit the frame of Draper’s racket and bounced off the court before he played it. However, the tournament did not have replay technology available, meaning the contentious point stood, handing Draper the victory.
Draper, who is preparing for the US Open, has spoken out about the impact the criticism had on him and the importance he places on integrity in his career. He insists that he did not see the ball hit the ground and would have been willing to replay the point if the error had been called at the time.
“It’s slowly moving on,” Draper told BBC Sport. “It was difficult for four or five days afterwards – it was the first time I’ve experienced criticism and had my integrity questioned as an athlete. For me, it’s one of the most important things to be honest, do the right thing, be a good person – more than just a good tennis player.”
The incident drew significant attention in the tennis world, with some fans and pundits questioning Draper’s sportsmanship. The young British star, who has been rapidly climbing the ATP rankings, acknowledges the situation has been challenging but remains focused on his commitment to fair play.
Draper’s response highlights the weight athletes carry beyond their on-court performances. “It was tough,” he added, “but I know in my heart that I always try to do what’s right. It’s a lesson for me in handling situations like this and staying true to my values.”
With the US Open just around the corner, Draper will be looking to move past the controversy and focus on his campaign in New York, where he aims to continue his strong form and establish himself further as Britain’s top tennis player.
As he prepares for his opening match, Draper remains determined to let his actions and results speak for themselves, while holding firm to the principles he holds dear both on and off the court.
