Jack Draper Falls to Holger Rune in Cincinnati Open Quarter-Finals
Jack Draper’s impressive run at the Cincinnati Open came to an end in the quarter-finals as he was defeated in straight sets by Denmark’s Holger Rune.
Draper, who had shown remarkable resilience by coming from a set down to win his previous two matches, was unable to mount a comeback against the 15th seed Rune. The Danish player secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory, capitalizing on his only break point of the first set to take a 3-2 lead. Rune further established his dominance by breaking Draper’s serve at the start of the second set and then saving three break points before claiming another break in the 11th game.
Rune, who is 21, will now face Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals after Hubert Hurkacz retired from their quarter-final match due to a calf injury, having lost the first set.
In other notable results, top seed Jannik Sinner of Italy avenged his recent defeat to Andrey Rublev by overcoming the Russian 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Sinner will face Alexander Zverev, who edged out Ben Shelton 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.
In the women’s draw, world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland fought past Mirra Andreeva 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to set up a semi-final clash with third seed Aryna Sabalenka. Sabalenka defeated Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-3.
Home favorite Jessica Pegula advanced after a marathon match against Leylah Fernandez, winning 7-5, 6-7, 7-6. Pegula will face Paula Badosa, who secured her semi-final spot with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
The semi-finals promise more exciting tennis as the tournament heads into its final stages.
