Great Britain's Heather Watson, Paul Jubb, and Sonay Kartal Advance in US Open Qualifying

Great Britain’s Heather Watson, Paul Jubb, and Sonay Kartal have all advanced through the first round of qualifying for the US Open, showcasing strong performances on the opening day.

Former British number one Heather Watson delivered a dominant display, cruising past last year's junior Wimbledon champion Clervie Ngounoue with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in just 69 minutes. Watson's impressive form sets her up for a promising run in the upcoming rounds.

Paul Jubb, currently ranked 193rd in the world, emerged victorious in an all-British clash, overcoming Jacob Fearnley 6-1, 7-6 (7-2). Despite being ranked 33 places below Fearnley, Jubb demonstrated resilience and skill to secure his place in the next round.

Sonay Kartal continued her strong season, following her third-round appearance at Wimbledon, by defeating Spain's Guiomar Maristany 6-3, 6-3. Kartal’s performance reaffirms her potential as she heads into the later stages of the qualifiers.

However, it was a disappointing day for Liam Broady, who was knocked out by Finland's Otto Virtanen in a close encounter, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7). Broady’s defeat follows a challenging season where he missed part of the grass-court season due to a concussion.

British players Billy Harris, Jan Choinski, Oliver Crawford, Fran Jones, and Lily Miyazaki are scheduled to compete in their first-round qualifiers on Tuesday.

The main draw at Flushing Meadows is set to commence on August 26.
