Great Britain Secures Team Sprint Silver as Netherlands Set World Record
Great Britain's cycling team continued their strong performance at the Olympic velodrome in Paris with a silver medal in the team sprint event. The trio of Jack Carlin, Ed Lowe, and Hamish Turnbull matched their Tokyo 2020 feat by securing second place, though they were outpaced by a record-breaking Netherlands team.
In a repeat of the Tokyo final, the Netherlands squad set a new world record with a blistering time of 40.949 seconds to claim gold. Britain, led by Carlin on the final lap, finished 0.865 seconds behind, recording a new national best.
This achievement follows the historic women's team sprint victory earlier in the competition, where Emma Finucane, Sophie Capewell, and Katy Marchant clinched gold on the first day of action at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome.
"I'm ecstatic. A silver medal is something I didn't think was possible going into this," said Lowe, 20, who is making his Olympic debut. "I'll definitely take that."
Turnbull, also a debutant, expressed his excitement: "I'm buzzing. We weren't expecting to fight for gold, we were chasing the bronze. To get into that gold final, all stress was off and we could really enjoy it and show everyone what we could do without any pressure on our backs."
The team sprint silver adds to Great Britain’s growing medal tally and showcases their continued dominance in track cycling.
