Economics Triumphs in Prix Guillaume d’Ornano, Sets Sights on Irish Champion Stakes
Economics made a notable return to the track with a commanding victory in the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville, showcasing his exceptional form after a successful campaign earlier in the season.
The imposing three-year-old, who had turned heads with a stunning performance in the Dante at York, proved his credentials again, leaving behind Royal Ascot winner Jayarebe in a strong field. Despite a potential clash with Derby winner City Of Troy in the Eclipse and other options like the Juddmonte International, trainer William Haggas opted for this Group Two race as the perfect reappearance point.
The race was not a mere formality. Jayarebe, trained by Brian Meehan, led briefly and looked to be in control. However, Economics, under the guidance of Tom Marquand, gradually overhauled the field. Once in the lead, the chestnut colt accelerated away to secure a comfortable win, with Almaqam finishing in third place.
Following this impressive performance, Economics has seen his odds shorten significantly for the Irish Champion Stakes, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and the Champion Stakes at Ascot. Haggas confirmed that the next target for Economics will be the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on September 14, noting the significance of the race for the horse’s owner, Sheikh Isa’s family.
Haggas expressed satisfaction with Economics' performance, acknowledging that while the horse is still growing into his frame, his potential is evident. “It was good to see him do it again. He’s a great big immature thing still, but he’s got an engine. If we look after him, he’ll repay us,” Haggas remarked.
In another notable performance, George Boughey’s Soprano bounced back to winning form in the Prix de Lieurey. After a series of minor roles since her Royal Ascot triumph in the Sandringham Stakes, Soprano, ridden by William Buick for the first time this season, dominated the race. The daughter of Starspangledbanner quickened away from the field, leaving her rivals trailing.
Soprano is now a contender for the Coolmore America “Justify” Matron Stakes at Leopardstown next month, with her odds improving to 12-1 from 16-1 by major bookmakers for the Group One event during Irish Champions Weekend.
