Content Gains Revenge with Stunning Yorkshire Oaks Victory
In a thrilling rematch, Content turned the tables on her Irish Oaks conqueror You Got To Me to claim the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks at York. The Aidan O’Brien-trained filly, a daughter of the legendary Galileo and dual Nunthorpe winner Mecca’s Angel, secured the most significant victory of her career on the Knavesmire, delivering a performance befitting her illustrious pedigree.
In the early stages of the race, Content was keen under the guidance of Ryan Moore, as stablemate Port Fairy set a moderate pace alongside William Haggas’ Sea Theme. However, as the field approached the straight, all eyes were drawn to the imposing figure of Emily Upjohn. The John and Thady Gosden-trained mare, ridden by Kieran Shoemark, appeared poised to take control as she cruised to the front.
But it was far from straightforward. The race evolved into a three-way tussle, with Curragh one-two You Got To Me and the well-supported 3-1 favorite Content closing in rapidly. With the line approaching, Content and Ralph Beckett’s Classic-winning filly edged past Emily Upjohn, but this time it was the Ballydoyle runner who dug deep to secure victory. In doing so, she became the late, great Galileo’s 100th individual Group One winner.
This triumph marked O’Brien’s eighth Yorkshire Oaks victory, continuing his dominance in this prestigious mile-and-a-half contest, having now won four of the last five editions.
Reflecting on the race, O’Brien highlighted the filly’s progression: “She has come forward since the Curragh, and each time we’ve stepped her up in trip, she has improved,” he said. “At the Curragh, the pace wasn’t strong enough, and the race didn’t open up for her, but today was different. Ryan gave her an incredible ride, and although she was keen, she showed tremendous heart and kept coming. She’s a brave filly and will be even better in a faster-run race.”
Looking ahead, O’Brien hinted at several potential targets for Content. “She could head to one of the fillies’ Arc trials, the Arc itself, the Vermeille, or possibly America. She’ll thrive in a strongly run race where she can get into her rhythm. It’s exciting to think about what she might achieve when racing at her true pace.”
With this victory, Content not only avenged her Irish Oaks defeat but also cemented her status as one of Europe’s top middle-distance fillies, with her future looking ever more promising on the world stage.
