Bernard Shaw Shines with Dominant Maiden Victory at Dundalk

Bernard Shaw showcased a performance brimming with potential as he romped to a commanding maiden victory at Dundalk. Trained by Aidan O’Brien, the colt, by American sire Into Mischief and acquired for a significant $1.8 million, delivered an impressive display in his second career start.

Following a promising debut at the Curragh in late June, where he finished fourth behind the subsequent Group Two Richmond Stakes winner Black Forza, Bernard Shaw stepped up to a mile for this race. His debut performance, ridden by Hall of Famer John Velazquez, hinted at his quality, and he lived up to those expectations on Tuesday.

In a field of seven, the two-year-old, starting as the 1-2 favourite, produced a standout performance under Wayne Lordan. Despite a slight drift across the track as he hit the front in the home straight, Bernard Shaw cruised to an easy nine-length victory, showcasing his class and potential.

Chris Armstrong, representing O’Brien’s stable, praised the colt's performance. “He’s a smashing colt and Wayne gave him a lovely ride,” Armstrong said. “His first run at the Curragh was very good, and the form is working out well. He was still quite green throughout the race, but once he got going, he really stretched away.”

Armstrong noted that Bernard Shaw has the capability to handle an increase in trip and quick ground, indicating that he could progress beyond a mile. “He’s a horse with plenty of class and is definitely one to watch for the back-end of the season,” he added. “The Champion Juvenile on Irish Champions Weekend at Leopardstown could be a potential target for him.”

With his maiden victory secured, Bernard Shaw is expected to be a significant contender in upcoming juvenile races, and his performance at Dundalk has set high expectations for his future career.
