Pace bowler Gus Atkinson will make his Test debut in England's series opener against West Indies at Lord's on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old Gus Atkinson has joined Chris Woakes and the retiring James Anderson as part of England's specialist seam attack. Atkinson's Surrey teammate, 23-year-old Jamie Smith, will also make his Test debut as wicketkeeper, a role confirmed when he was selected over Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes.
Atkinson, who has experience in nine one-day internationals and three T20s, was part of the England squad for the Test tour of India earlier this year but did not play in any matches. Smith, usually a specialist batter for Surrey with Foakes behind the stumps, kept wickets for England in two one-day internationals against Ireland last year.
Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, chosen over his Somerset teammate Jack Leach, will play his first home Test after earning three caps on the India tour.
England's XI for the match includes Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, and James Anderson.
