  • Oval Invincibles: 113-9 (100 balls): Ferreira 30 (23); Ball 3-24
  • Welsh Fire: 103-8 (100 balls): Payne 28 (15); Zampa 3-24
  • Oval Invincibles won by 10 runs

Oval Invincibles displayed remarkable resilience and bowling prowess to defend a modest total of 113, securing a thrilling 10-run victory over Welsh Fire in The Hundred men's competition at Sophia Gardens.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Invincibles found themselves in early trouble, slipping to 43-4. Key players Dawid Malan and Sam Billings were dismissed cheaply, with Malan falling for a duck and Billings managing just three runs. Will Jacks provided a brief spark with a quick 25, but his dismissal left the Invincibles struggling.

A crucial 46-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Sam Curran (20) and Donovan Ferreira (30) steadied the innings. However, Curran's departure, caught by Tom Kohler-Cadmore at long-on, triggered a collapse. The Invincibles lost 5-16 in just 18 balls, scoring a mere five runs from David Payne's final set, and concluded their innings at 113-9.

In response, Welsh Fire also faced early setbacks. Jonny Bairstow and Joe Clarke were bowled out cheaply, while opener Tom Kohler-Cadmore struggled to find his rhythm, scoring a labored 22 from 33 balls. The Fire's chase was further hindered by the brilliant leg-spin duo of Adam Zampa (3-24) and Nathan Sowter (2-12), who dismantled the middle order. The home side experienced a collapse similar to their opponents, losing 5-16 from the halfway mark, leaving them needing 52 runs from the final 21 balls.

David Payne then sparked hopes of a comeback with a blistering 28 off 15 deliveries, forming a 40-run partnership with Mason Crane. Despite their valiant efforts, the Fire needed two sixes from the final balls to clinch victory. Payne's attempt to clear the boundary resulted in a catch by Malan at cover, sealing a well-deserved win for the Invincibles.

The match highlighted the unpredictability and excitement of The Hundred format, with both teams experiencing highs and lows. The Invincibles' bowling attack, led by Zampa, proved decisive in defending a low total and securing their victory.

As the competition progresses, the Invincibles will look to build on this hard-fought win, while Welsh Fire will aim to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
