Jannik Sinner Withdraws from Paris Olympics Due to Tonsillitis

Rome, Italy – World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Paris Olympics due to a bout of tonsillitis. The 22-year-old Italian, who was considered a top contender for the gold medal on the Paris clay, announced his decision on social media, expressing his disappointment at missing the Games.

Sinner, who recently struggled with illness during his Wimbledon quarter-final loss to Daniil Medvedev, had been training on clay in preparation for the Olympics. However, his preparations were disrupted by the onset of illness.

"After a good week of clay training I started to feel unwell," Sinner shared in a post on X. "I spent a couple of days resting and during a visit the doctor found tonsillitis and strongly advised me against playing."

This diagnosis has forced Sinner to withdraw from the tournament, which takes place from 27 July to 4 August. The young Italian had been targeting the Olympics as one of his main goals for the season, especially after reaching the French Open semi-finals and winning his first major title at the Australian Open in January.

"Missing the Games is a huge disappointment as it was one of my main goals for this season," Sinner added. His absence will be a significant blow to the Italian team and fans who were hopeful of seeing him compete for Olympic gold.

Sinner's withdrawal opens up the field in the men's tennis tournament, where he was expected to be a major competitor. The Olympic tennis event, held at the historic Roland Garros stadium, will now proceed without one of its brightest stars.

As Sinner focuses on his recovery, the tennis world wishes him a swift return to health and looks forward to his future competitions. His decision to prioritize his well-being underscores the importance of health in the demanding world of professional sports.

Upcoming Tennis Tournament:

  • Dates: 27 July - 4 August
  • Venue: Roland Garros, Paris

Despite this setback, Sinner's impressive achievements this year and his rising status in the tennis world promise a strong return once he has fully recovered.
