Gallagher Makes Champions League Debut as Atletico Madrid Snatch Late Win Against RB Leipzig
Conor Gallagher marked his first appearance in the Champions League for Atletico Madrid as they clinched a dramatic 2-1 victory over RB Leipzig in their opening match of the group stage. The England midfielder, a £33m summer signing from Chelsea, came off the bench in the 63rd minute with the score tied at 1-1, playing a pivotal role in a tense encounter at the Wanda Metropolitano.
The German side took an early lead in just the fourth minute when Benjamin Sesko’s powerful header beat Atletico’s goalkeeper, Jan Oblak. However, Atletico responded through Antoine Griezmann, who equalized with a sensational volley in the 28th minute, netting his 37th career goal in the Champions League. Griezmann, one of the night’s standout performers, was later denied a second goal by an excellent save from RB Leipzig’s Peter Gulacsi, who kept the contest finely balanced.
With both sides battling for control and Gallagher adding fresh energy to Atletico’s midfield, the match seemed destined for a draw. But in the 90th minute, Griezmann’s perfectly delivered cross found Jose Maria Gimenez, whose downward header secured all three points for the home side, sending the Atletico fans into raptures.
Gallagher’s introduction brought a new dynamic to Atletico’s play, as the 23-year-old became only the second English player to feature in the Champions League for the Spanish giants, following in the footsteps of Kieran Trippier. His arrival in Madrid has generated excitement, and his performance showed promise as he adapted quickly to the high-paced intensity of European football.
Next up in the group stage, Atletico Madrid will travel to face Benfica on 2 October, while RB Leipzig look to bounce back when they host Juventus.
