Sebastian Korda and Paula Badosa Shine at Washington Open
Korda's Triumph in Washington: A Family Legacy Fulfilled
Sebastian Korda achieved a historic milestone by winning the Washington Open, mirroring the accomplishment of his father, Petr Korda, who claimed the same title in 1992. This victory marks a significant moment for the Korda family, making them the first father and son duo to win the same tournament in ATP Tour history.
The 24-year-old Korda triumphed over Italy’s Flavio Cobolli with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, securing the second title of his career. Reflecting on this achievement, Korda expressed his deep connection to the tournament and the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition.
“We [the Korda family] have a lot of history with this tournament. One of my biggest goals was one day coming here and hopefully winning the tournament and putting my name up there on the stadium,” Korda said. “This is probably the most special moment of my career so far.”
Korda's coach, Radek Stepanek, who himself was coached by Petr Korda, won the Washington Open in 2011, adding another layer of significance to this victory. With this win, Sebastian Korda will ascend to a career-high world ranking of number 18.
Badosa’s Inspirational Comeback
In the women's draw, former world number two Paula Badosa overcame Marie Bouzkova with a scoreline of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to capture her first title in over two years. This victory marks a remarkable comeback for Badosa, who had fallen out of the top 100 in 2023 due to a stress fracture in her back.
The 26-year-old Spaniard's determination and resilience were on full display as she battled through the tournament, ultimately re-entering the top 50 with this win. Badosa, who gained a wildcard to compete in Washington, reflected on the significance of her victory.
“Especially what I went through the last year, for me being back, winning big titles like a 500, winning against the best players in the world, competing against them again, for me it means a lot,” Badosa said. “One year ago I was on the couch so it's a big difference now. Now I'm an athlete again.”
The Washington Open saw two remarkable stories of resilience and legacy unfold. Sebastian Korda’s victory not only honored his family’s history but also set a new record in ATP Tour history. Meanwhile, Paula Badosa’s triumphant return to form demonstrated her unwavering spirit and determination. Both champions have provided the tennis world with inspiring narratives of success and perseverance.
