Samoa’s Darius Visser Sets T20 International Record with 39 Runs in an Over

Darius Visser made history on Tuesday by smashing six sixes in an over, setting a new men’s T20 International record of 39 runs in a single over during a 2026 T20 World Cup regional qualifier.

The record-breaking over came in the 15th over of Samoa’s innings against Vanuatu, bowled by seamer Nalin Nipiko. Visser, 28, faced nine deliveries in the over due to three no-balls and one dot-ball, but made the most of his chances by hitting six consecutive sixes. His innings of 132 runs off 62 balls included 14 sixes and five fours, marking him as the first Samoan to achieve an international century.

Samoa posted a total of 174 runs, and Visser’s all-round performance was pivotal as he also took a wicket. Vanuatu, despite their efforts, were restricted to 164-9, allowing Samoa to secure a 10-run victory at the Garden Oval No 2 in Apia, Samoa.

Visser’s feat surpasses the previous T20I record of 36 runs in an over, achieved by India’s Yuvraj Singh who hit six consecutive sixes off England’s Stuart Broad during the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. Other players who have equaled this record include West Indies' Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran, Nepal’s Dipendra Singh Airee, and India’s Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh, who combined for 36 runs against Afghanistan earlier this year.

In women’s T20 Internationals, the record for most runs in an over is held by Chile’s Florencia Martinez, who conceded 52 runs against Argentina in 2023. The match saw Argentina compile a T20 International record score of 427 in a remarkable victory.

Visser’s record-setting performance highlights the increasing competitiveness and excitement in T20 cricket as teams continue to push the boundaries of the game.
