Phoenix Cruise to Victory as Stokes Falters on Return in The Hundred
In a dominant display at Edgbaston, Birmingham Phoenix secured a historic 10-wicket victory over Northern Superchargers in The Hundred men's competition, marking the first time such a margin has been achieved in the tournament.
Northern Superchargers were bundled out for a mere 83 runs in 96 balls, the third-lowest total recorded in The Hundred. The spotlight was on England captain Ben Stokes, who returned to the competition for the first time in three years, but his comeback was far from triumphant. Stokes was dismissed for a first-ball duck by a superb Tim Southee yorker, adding to the Superchargers' woes.
Southee's exceptional performance saw him claim three wickets for just 15 runs, spearheading a disciplined Phoenix bowling attack. Harry Brook was the only Supercharger to offer some resistance, scoring 15 runs off 14 balls.
In response, Birmingham Phoenix made light work of the chase, reaching the target in just 39 balls without losing a wicket. England's Ben Duckett led the charge with an explosive 43 not out from 20 balls, while captain Moeen Ali provided solid support, remaining unbeaten on 37 from 21 balls. Moeen sealed the victory in style, smashing a six off the final ball to complete the fastest chase in the competition's history.
This emphatic win propels Birmingham Phoenix to third place on the table with six points, leapfrogging Northern Superchargers. The victory also underscores Phoenix's potent form as they push towards the knockout stages.
Reflecting on his first appearance in the tournament since its inaugural season in 2021, Stokes expressed a desire to make an impact in the remaining group matches. Speaking to Sky Sports before the match, he confirmed his intention to feature in the Superchargers' final three group games before focusing on England's upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, starting at Old Trafford on 21 August.
Scorecard:
- Northern Superchargers 83 all out (96 balls): Brook 15 (14); Southee 3-15
- Birmingham Phoenix 83-0 (39 balls): Duckett 43* (20), Moeen 37* (21)
Phoenix's comprehensive victory not only showcases their strength but also adds pressure on the Superchargers to regroup quickly if they are to remain in contention for the playoffs.
